Tweets cost Endorsements

It is amazing the speed of sound social media travels. We have always been impressed with how everyone uses social media and when it bites them, for celebrities it is blood sport. The story we speak of happened this week when Rashard Mendenhall, tweeted out some crazy. We are not going to repeat the crazy but he sounded off against the celebration of the execution of Osama Bin Laden and then topped that with 9/11 was an inside job. Everyone is entitled to a good conspiracy theory but social media is not forgiving. Neither is the company Champion once they heard the comments they dropped Mendenhall like a step mother in a divorce. The endorsement deal he signed last Sunday with Champion sports apparel was pulled. Champion decided to end their relationship with Mendenhall because of controversial Tweets he sent out in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death. Does it not get any better than this first of all you are in the public eye it is one thing to go off half baked with your friends, on the Internet it can be costly. This time it was as Mendenhall cost himself around four million dollars because of two tweets sent less than an hour apart. Remember that means it was less than 280 characters and really hitting the send button twice cost him a lot more than money. He is now on the radar as 9/11 apologist, a fanatical Muslim sympathizer and best a dumb jock who does not know when to shut up.
